The town of Pujehun south of Sierra Leone will be abuzz with excitement this Monday 16th October, as thousands of farmers from across the country throng to witness the Launch of Feed Salone- an initiative by President Julius Maada Bio to achieve food self-sufficiency.
President Bio is pursuing the ambitious agricultural project to achieve what he calls food sovereignty for Sierra Leone, and has been drumming up support for the venture not only within the country but also abroad, as seen at this Year’s United Nations General Assembly in New York where he spoke passionately about Feed Salone.
He has stressed that the country has all the encouraging conditions- vast arable land, sufficient rainfall and sunlight to have successful farming.
He recently ensured the setting up of a Presidential Council for Feed Salone that will monitor and advice on the agricultural project.
The President of the National Federation of Farmers, Yatta Samah recently told Journalists in Freetown that they have so far registered seventy-two thousand farmers in the country. Presently Sierra Leone spends some 280 Million US Dollars yearly on the importation of rice- the country’s staple food.
