Two-year-old Esther Mamie Margai who is suffering from a rare disease arrived in New Delhi, India on Thursday morning with her Mother, where she is to undergo surgery, according to Alfred Charles of the Sick Pikin Project that supports the treatment of children with  ailments that often require treatment abroad.

Little Esther suffers from Ameloblastoma – an abnormal swelling of the mouth. According to Charles, a year ago, the baby fell down which led to two of her teeth piercing through her lip, and had to be extracted. But a growth soon emerged that began spreading around her mouth. However, he said doctors could not tell whether the girl’s condition was connected to her accident.

Esther will spend 6 weeks in India and is expected to make a full recovery and return to Sierra Leone with her mother Adama Maria Margai.

Charles told Politico that Sick Pikin had to embark on a robust fundraising drive for Esther that was augmented by the involvement of BBC Correspondent in Sierra Leone Umaru Fofana who took part in a Charity Concert.

He expressed gratitude to his team of volunteers that often do street fund-raising and those individuals, within and outside Sierra Leone including UK-based American Vicki Middleton, Vista Bank Sierra Leone, Save the Future Generation UK, Umaru Fofana, Dr. Khadijatu Ahene, Dr. Isatu Diallo, Haja Rashida and all others who contributed towards Esther’s medical and travel expenses of some $30,000.
