Man convicted for fraud in Makeni

Justice Unisa Kamara of the Makeni High Court has sentenced Alimamy Kabbia  Chairman of a social group based in Makeni called “Like Minds,” to two years and six months imprisonment or pay a fine of NLE 5000 (Five thousand new Leones) to the state for embezzling the group’s fund.

The verdict passed by the presiding judge on Monday 3rd March 2023 also ensured that the 50 -year -old convict pays NLE 14, 550 (Fourteen thousand five hundred and fifty new Leones) as compensation to the group in three installments on or before July this year.

He was convicted on all 17  charges slammed against him ranging from causing money to be paid on a forged instrument and obtaining money on forged instruments contrary to law.

The two years and six months jail term for each of the charges is to run concurrently.

The social group was said to consist of people who were born and raised in Makeni and it was formed after the violent protest in Makeni over a generator in a bid to source funds to support the victims of the incident.

One of the executive members of the social group, Beatrice Koroma, first reported the embezzlement case at the Mena Police Station in Makeni. The state prosecutor of the case was J.A.K Sesay, while O.B. Kamara from Legal Aid Board represented the accused.
