Sierra Leone’s Parliament has unanimously approved the country’s first North West Commissioner; Albert Samba Sesay was approved on the 14th February 2023.
The Leader of the main opposition party in Parliament Chernor M. Bah called on commissioners to be referees and not players. He admitted that they were not satisfied with the consultations though they approved of the nominee.
He stated that during the interview, he noticed that Sesay’s Curriculum Vitae is rich and that he was up to the task.
The Leader of Government Business Bashiru Silikie stated that when the region was created, they had no commissioner for it, stating that the commissioner for the North East had to work for both regions.
He applauded President Julius Maada Bio for nominating Sesay to take care of that region.
Responding to the Leader of the Opposition, Silikie said it was difficult to consult with the opposition because they did not have a leader.
Representing Constituency 094, MP Veronica Kadie Sesay applauded President Bio for ensuring national cohesion and inclusivity, noting that the nominee is from another tribe and was being included in national development.
She stated that oneness and inclusion was the only way the country could grow.
Sesay urged the nominee to keep women in mind, stating that they usually have low female representation from the North and would this time want to see more capable women.
MP for Constituency 023, Musa Fofanah stated that he had known the nominee for over twenty years, highlighting his former places of work and emphasizing that he was confident that Sesay would perform very well in his new capacity.
After the approval, the Speaker of Parliament Chernor Abass Bundu congratulated the nominee and like other MPs stated that he had no doubt that the newly approved commissioner will perform his duty.
He asked the commissioner to work with the team and ensure that they have free and fair elections.
