The Anti-Smuggling Unit, Border Controls and Management within the Customs Department of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) has uncovered an illegal timber depot in a village called Katonga, off Bundulah, PortLoko district.
According to the Assistant Commissioner of the Anti- Smuggling Unit, Richard Senessie, they've been receiving reports of timber being transported across various illegal crossing points between Sierra Leone and Guinea. He said he cannot ascertain the volume of timber smuggling at the moment as his unit has sanctioned investigations into the matter.
He further said that he has alerted other security sectors, and that investigations were underway.
Leadway Company operated by Babadi Kamara is the only authorized agent for the export of timber.
