Sierra Leone is back at the African Nations Cup!

Sierra Leoneans both home and abroad were in a jubilant mood after the country's national team, Leone Stars, thrashed the Squirrels of Benin by a goal to nil at the Lansana Conteh Stadium in Conakry, Guinea on Tuesday evening to qualify for the AFCON tournament for the first time in 25 years. 

Striker Kei Kamara, who had always wished to play for his country at the Nations Cup, scored the first-half penalty in the 19th minute to secure a place for Sierra Leone at the AFCON tournament since 1996.

The roar of delirious fans drowned even the noise of the evening rush hour traffic in central Freetown to herald another epic chapter in Sierra Leone’s football history: Leone Stars have finally triumphed over a rather edgy bunch of opponents in the Squirrels of Benin, to make it through to Cameroon AfCON 2022.

Sierra Leone’s national football team, Leone Stars are meeting the Squirrels of Benin in the Guinean capital, Conakry today Monday 14 June 2021 to determine which of the two countries will make it to the AfCON tournament in Cameroon next year.

Sierra Leone is hoping for a third appearance since 1996 in South Africa while their opponents are expecting a fifth appearance if they could manage a draw. Leone Stars have to win by a two goal margin to make it through.

New Venue for Sierra Leone - Benin Clash

The Court of Arbitration for Sports in Lausanne, Switzerland has on the 10th June 2021 refused the appeal made by both Sierra Leone and Benin Football Associations. The postponed AfCON crucial match between the national teams of Sierra Leone and Benin will now take place in Conakry, Guinea on Monday 14 June 2021.
