The sackings of the minister and deputy minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs came as a shock to many students of men and things owing to the fact that such unseemly behavior by top government officials had not in the past elicited such robust response.

The president has the prerogative of hiring and firing ministers and other officials in his wisdom and not mindlessly. As a result it is expected that he appoints citizens of integrity especially where there is no shortage of such a cadre in the country.

Reconciliation has been crucial to foster peace in post-war Sierra Leone. One organization has been instrumental in this – Fambul Tok International. The local NGOs, in spite of its name, used ground breaking alternative dispute resolution mechanism to bring victims and perpetrators together.

John Caulker, Director of Fambul Tok, spoke to Politico in this interview with Kemo Cham and Mustapha Kamara, who first asked him why did Fambul Tok intervene?

What do you think about the war?

Whenever many Sierra Leoneans hear the three letter word acronym –RUF (Revolutionary United Front), it often provokes different types of emotions - from fear, to grief to shock.

The eleven year [1991-2002] civil war brought carnage and left despair amongst millions of people. Almost all those that survived the war have a horrible tale to tell and most of them believe that RUF was responsible.

It’s been 25 years since the civil war first erupted in Sierra Leone, a war that unleashed terror and untold suffering on the people.

Officially it started on 23 March 1991 and lasted for the next eleven years; a lot of human rights violations and abuses ranging from killing, rape, looting, to amputation of innocent citizens were reported.

The Safe Abortion Act 2015 has evoked such national controversy as has not been known in recent times. After being referred to the president he returned it to parliament and it has again been returned to him without amendment. The imbroglio deepens.
