National COVID-19 Emergency Response Centre’s Vaccination Lead Tom Sesay has on the 21st October 2021 told journalists during the weekly government press conference at the Ministry of Information and Communications about the commencement of vaccination surge 2 ,starting on Monday.
Speaking on how they intend to go about the exercise, Sesay explained that the plan is to have a 20 day surge during which they will deploy “about three hundred vaccination teams across the country. He revealed that their target for the next two months is six hundred thousand people.
He said they will focus on tertiary institutions, health care workers, tricycle (kehkeh ) and motor bike(Okada) riders, market places, people with disabilities, and other areas.
He also said the country has so far received one million, one hundred and eighty six thousand, three hundred and seventy doses of COVID19 vaccines from different sources. He also spoke about three hundred and thirty two thousand doses of Pfizer and Johnson and Johnson vaccines that would be coming to Sierra Leone.
Four hundred and fifty two thousand, six hundred and forty people have received at least one dose vaccine, according to Sesay, and include those who took the Johnson and Johnson vaccine and those having received a single dose. 11% of Sierra Leoneans 18 years and above are said to have received at least one dose, whilst 4.57% are fully vaccinated.
Sesay said they are trying to increase the number, noting that the more people are vaccinated, the safer the country becomes. He encouraged all to go for the jab.
NaCOVERC’s Spokesperson, Solomon Jamiru warned Sierra Leoneans to practice all precautionary measures. He also noted that despite the fact the country has good record, people should be vigilant as the festive season approaches, urging all to be mindful in order to prevent another wave. He also recalled that the second wave was triggered by activities around the last festive season.
