Politico can authoritatively confirm that the suspended Director General of the Electricity Distribution and Supply Agency, EDSA has been reinstated. At the time of his indefinite suspension alongside his deputy in 2021, the Ministry of Energy which supervises EDSA gave no reasons but it was a particularly difficult time for EDSA as public outcry grew louder over the rolling blackouts, especially in Freetown.
Politico understands that the board of EDSA, chaired by Engineer Sidi Bakarr met recently and approved the return of Dr. Joe-Lahai Sormana in the second week of September 2023. When we called up the returning EDSA boss, he told us he hadn’t received any letter to the effect but would get in touch with us when he is officially contacted.
Abu Kamara, who served as Director General in the absence of Dr. Sormana is returning to his job with the Public Private Partnership from where he was seconded to EDSA.
Dr. Sormana who holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology is returning to EDSA at a time when the agency is proposing an increase in the tariff of electricity from 11 cents to 23 cents, over 100% increment. This has however raised public outcry given the current economic difficulties in the country.
