The Office of the outgoing Students Union’s (SU) President at Fourah Bay College has accused some students of destroying the university’s property during the chaos that broke out on campus last Thursday at the manifesto reading of one of the aspiring candidates for the Student Union Presidency.
A press release by the SU dated 26th August 2022 explained that the university’s only bus was vandalized and some hostel rooms were broken into during the riot. It further explained that the incident caused unrest on campus and that students who resided in the hostel had to leave as a result of the situation.
Police were called to ease the situation and had to use tear gas canisters to dispatch the irate groups.
The union promised the students peace and added that all the identified culprits will face the law.
Alfred Micah Sesay one of the SU presidential candidates criticized the destruction saying that. “It is so sad to report that some students’ sustained injuries and emotional distress, in addition to that, part of the hostels that were vandalized” he stated.
“I want to strongly condemn the act that took place yesterday and call on the administration to investigate and bring perpetrators to book”, Sesay went on. He then called on all students to stay peaceful.
Another contender for the presidency, Salamatu Kakay also issued a statement explaining that the 25th of August 2022 was dedicated to her by the University for her Manifesto reading, and claimed it was during this period that intruders interrupted the reading and created chaos.
Kakay and members of her team just like their opponents were quick to condemn the action which they described as an “attack” and also frowned at the destruction caused to the long prayed-for student hostels.
Kakay extended sympathy to those that sustained injuries and expressed her commitment to sticking to her manifesto.
