Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) National Executive Council (NEC) has in a statement condemned the violence that took place on Tuesday, 29th June 2021 at the party’s Headquarters in Freetown.
Carrying placards denouncing any further extension of the mandate of the party’s national executive council, the protesters on Tuesday 29th June 2021 said they wanted new elections to be conducted to choose their leaders since the current holders of various positions had already been extended three times.
The protest was timed to coincide with a meeting of the national executive led by Dr. Prince Harding who further extended their mandate until December 2021.
The statement hinged on resolutions which were given on the 24th March 2021 by the party's NEC. The statement further added that their action is in conformity with Article 5 (C) Subsection 1 of the SLPP Constitution of 2020. The said section provides a mandate for NEC to meet at least every 3 months to coincide with Parliament where possible.
NEC then proffered solutions and resolutions with regards to happenings at the party headquarters that led to riotous conduct by party supporters and sympathizers.
The statement acknowledged the NEC meeting of Wednesday, 29th June 2021, and condemned “all forms of violent attacks perpetrated” against their membership during the conduct of the rerun lower level elections in Bombali, Tonkolili, and Western Area. It continued to brand the perpetrators as ‘purported supporters’ with unruly behavior.
It also condemned the ‘verbal’ and ‘physical attacks’ against the party Chairman, Dr. Prince Harding who it said was attacked by ‘faceless cowards’.
The statement confirmed that NEC has ratified and confirmed the newly elected executive members of SLPP for the South and Northwest regions in Sierra Leone and North America region. An extension of the term of office for Executive members where elections were not conducted including the Western Area has been instituted until the end of December 2021.
It resolved that a committee to look into reports of the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) be set up comprising Momodu Koroma as Chairman, Rev. Hindolo Butcher, Brima Conteh, Bilow Sow, Alpha Ndoleh, Bintu Myers, and Mathew Nyuma.
