SLP trains personnel on crime investigation

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has ended a two day refresher training of Detectives attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) from various divisions in the Eastern region.

The training commenced at the Reservation Quarter in Kenema on the 4th and ended on the 5th November, 2022.

In his statement, the Training Coordinator and also Regional Crime Officer, Freetown West, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Meilah Bangura said, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) felt the need to conduct the training as a way of capacitating Police personnel to perform well in service delivery to the public.

He further said that, the training will help improve the knowledge of personnel in crime investigation and criminal cases that are brought forward to them, noting that the current strength of criminal activities are most times committed through cyber.

DSP Bangura maintained that, crime such as cyber, money- laundering and human trafficking are said to be emerging crimes in the country and that people have been affected. He said it is therefore prudent on  officers to be given such training to broaden their skills in investigating those matters.

He further stated that the training addressed the system of investigation that will equip officers to ask questions that will enhance their gathering of enough evidences to win cases when charged to court. He reiterated that the session will empower Police officers in report -writing upon completion of investigations before charging cases to court.

Addressing personnel at the training session, the Regional Commander East, Commissioner Andrew Mustapha Kamara commended the IGP for coming up with the exercise which he described as important and timely. He said building the capacity of officers will increase their knowledge especially when technology has led to the emergence of new crimes they may have to handle.

The Police Regional Commander maintained that it was the first time for such capacitating of CID personnel.

Commissioner Kamara urged the participants to be focused and called on them to help disseminate the knowledge gained to other officers yet to benefit from the refresher training on crime investigation.

At the end of the exercise one of the beneficiaries, Police Constable (PC) Mariama Suwu referred to the training as timely and very helpful to them.

She said that they have been conducting certain methods of investigation that were not proper, and said the refresher training has broadened their mindset in investigating some critical cases and enhancing their   professionalism.

Sub-Inspector Lansana Jajua from Kenema CID branch described the training as building their capacity to know about the new cyber crimes and how to go about in investigating them. He encouraged colleagues to continue doing professional work as he said police duty requires everyday research, and commended the Management of the SLP for the training.
