Six people have reportedly escaped from police custody in Pujehun, southern Sierra Leone.

The alleged escapees, all males, are said to be among 10 people who were being investigated for various offences ranging from sexual offences to larceny. Four among those who escaped were alleged sexual offenders, while the remaining two are wanted for larceny.

The six men, according to sources, were awaiting court trial when they allegedly forced their way out of custody on Sunday, November 15.

Politico learnt that they escaped through a space created to provide ventilation in the cells, but which is guarded by iron bars.

According to the Police, the incident was brought to their notice by one of the ten inmates in detention.

The Local Unit Commander in Pujehun, Honour Kamara, told Politico that the police have rearrested two of the escaped suspects on Tuesday, and that they were charged for attempting to escaped and subsequently found guilty and sentenced to four months in jail, each.

LUC Kamara said investigations on the incident were ongoing at the Regional Office in Bo.

“There are procedures whenever such situation happens. They do give the police at least three days to go in search of the suspects. They have rearrested two, and they are still out to find the other four,” he said.
