President Julius Maada Bio says he understands there is an economic hardship in the country and appeals for patience, noting that his government is doing all it can to ameliorate the situation.
Bio made the statement during the opening of a Technical and Vocational Center for the Sierra Leone Police Wives’ Association.
"I hear… I feel the pain and I can understand with the common man who says the ‘grun dry’. And I can understand the language, but the development and improvement of the political, socio and economic well-being of a human being does not come about easily,” he said.
He added: “Laying the fundamentals, which we are concentrating on, is very important. Some of us have witnessed the downward trend in this country. I will only ask you all to be patient as I try to change the narratives."
Bio also said that there was enough evidence to show that his government was trying to change the prevailing narratives that is known of the country.
“The assurance that I can give you is that we cannot change a country in a year and half, but we are changing the prevailing narratives of this country – a country known as a very corrupt country, war, diseases, Ebola, indiscipline. That is changing and it is an important element for what we stand for; but we all have a role to play,” he said.
The reforms of the current Bio administration have come at a major cost to most citizens who are feeling the harsh economic situation in the country.
The recent scorecard of the Millennium Challenge Cooperation showed the country is still struggling with its Fiscal Policy where it scored 4% and Inflation where it scored 11%.
