Sierra Leonean students in Russia get allowances, but not out of the wood yet

The Sierra Leone Embassy in Moscow has confirmed payment of one hundred and seventy-six thousand four hundred US dollars ($176,400) as allowances to 98 students studying in the Russian Federation for the 2021/2022 academic year.

“Additionally, the Embassy wishes to inform the general public that it also received ($9000) nine thousand United States Dollars as stipend to (5) students studying in the Republic of Serbia,” the statement announcing the payment reads in part. It stated that the said monies have already been disbursed to the students through the appropriate accounts.

Ambassador Mohamed Yongawo thanked the government for its continued support to Human Capital Development.

In reaction to the monies received, the students also in a press statement dated 19th August 2022 expressed appreciation to the government of Sierra Leone for responding to their cries.

However, the statement noted that the monies disbursed to them were for the previous academic year which was to be received at the start of September 2021.

“We are therefore urging the Government to keep to its word and disburse monies for the soon-to-commence academic year within the rightful stipulated time, September 2022,” the statement reads.

It added that students who already graduated are still waiting for the purchase of their return Air tickets to enable them to return safely to Sierra Leone.

Leone. “As per immigration law, no concession is granted for a student to stay in the Russian Federation for a day after the expiration date of his/her visa.”
