Stakeholders in the telecommunications sector and officials from the Ministry of Information and Communication and the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM) have at a validation workshop deliberated on the proposed National Electronics Communications Bill 2020.
The event which took place at the J&E Resort in Bo City over the weekend, was meant to build a consensus on the general framework of the proposed bill.
Minister of Information and Communication, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, explained to participants at the event that the thrust of the whole process was to discuss government’s intention to address critical legal and regulatory issues that would form the basis of transforming Sierra Leone to a digital economy and at the same time put the country at a better position for inclusive sustainable socio-economic development, thereby making full use of the opportunities ICT/Telecom provides.
The Minister was hopeful that participants will present a strong document that reflects the desires of and views of all the players in the sector.
NATCOM’s Acting Chairperson, Madiana Samba, in her statement, spoke about the importance of the bill which she said provides the opportunity for an improved delivery of telecommunication services for all players within the industry. She described the communication sector as dynamic, noting that it needed legal review and development.
On behalf of the mobile operators, Haffie Haffner from Orange Telecom Company registered gratitude for their inclusion in the deliberations. She said they were keen to make their input to the process and committed their support towards the bill. A number of political party representatives, and the Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Martin Nyuma, participated in the validation process which lasted for two days.
