Sierra Leone sets rules for school-leaving exams candidates

By Saio Marrah

The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has sets rules for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidates by ensuring they go through the required school routine before attempting the public examination.

The public notice from the ministry with the title “rules for WASSCE 2022 entry” said for first time test takers must have been promoted to Senior School (SSS) level three in 2021 and 2202 school year before attempting the examination.  They should have also taken the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the 2019 and 2020 academic year before being allowed to take the WASSCE.

Other criteria for the same first time candidates are that they must not be in SSS1 or SSS2 in the 2022 and 2023 school year.  Possessing the National Identification Number (NIN) and 80% minimum attendance at the time of entry are all requirement to attempt the WASSCE exam.

For the repeaters, a proof of attempting the 2021 and 2022 WASSCE should show and that the same candidate must have sat the BECE in 2018 and 2019 academic year.

Aside evidences of NIN and 80% of school attendance, the pupils should have only repeated in their school where they took their previous WASSCE.  Compelling issues like sickness and child birth are the only excuses for the attendance requirement.

School authorities are also warned to ensure they admit only pupils that met the criteria set by the MBSSE. Also schools that have been approved for recognition at level one, according to the school approval guidance,  are urged to continue paying examination fees until they are qualified for financial assistance, which is the level two.

The school authorities are further instructed to enter pupils with 2021 and 2022 promotional results and 2019 and 2020 BECE results and that they can only admit the number of repeated pupils their schools can accommodate.

The public notice added that the repeaters must be recorded on the class attendance register that is marked every day.

The ministry also compelled the school authorities to ensure both the first time and repeaters’ BECE results are verified via the free 468 result checker and that the issues of every transfer are fully documented, signed and stamped by the principal.
