Sierra Leone Registrar General calls for business registration

The Office of Administrator and Registrar General has on the 7th July 2021 urged residents of Eastern region to register their businesses and other documents with the registrar general’s office in the region. He made this call at a stakeholder consultative meeting held at the district council hall, in Kenema.

In his statement, the Regional Human Rights Officer, East Sylvester Sidie Kallon said the consultative engagement with the people of Kenema is timely and that decentralizing the office of Administrator and Registrar General is appreciated by the people as it will help reduce the challenges in terms of accessing their services.

Kallon added that decentralization from human rights, lens is very important in terms of development as it provides opportunity for inclusion which paved way for transparency and accountability without any discrimination, noting that it was in line with goal six of the Sustainable Development Goal which as a country has domesticated with the principle of leaving no one behind.

He said the work of the registrar general is challenged by the fact that there are a duplication of roles with other institutions such as the National Civil Registration Authority, Local Councils and office of senior district officers. He therefore recommends for a review of functions by the government.

Given an overview of the consultative meeting, the Head of the Office of the Administrator Registrar General east, Abdulai Bewie Esq. said, the registration of properties such as land is very significant because many landowners are engaged in double-dealing of a single land.

He stated that, the coming of the office in the region is to mitigate some of the land conflicts that has mounted tensions among people.  He added that the ministry of land and chiefdoms authorities should be contacted in acquiring any land so that proper documentation is done.

Bewie encouraged people engaged in joint businesses to do the necessary registration so that the in the end, one party does not claim ownership of the business at the expense of the other partner.

On behalf of the paramount chief of Nongowa chiefdom, Chief Alex Bob Lahai thanked the office of registrar general for educating them more about their activities especially on the need to register their lands and other properties such as weed for the benefit of family properties.

He assured them that they will pass on the information to their subjects and asked them to continue the public education so that more people will see the necessity of registering their properties with the office of the registrar general.
