Sierra Leone redenomination bill becomes law

  • Dr Abass Bundu, Speaker

By Saio Marrah

The redenomination of the Leones bill, which authorizes the deduction of three zeros from the Sierra Leone currency, was yesterday 14th December passed into law after 21 working days without objection as stated by Parliamnet.

The Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Abass Bundu, made the disclosure after a member of parliament from the main opposition, All People’s Congress (APC), Abdul Kargbo representing Constituency 077, Kambia   commented on the said bill.

However, another Member of Parliament, Daniel Koroma of Constituency 046, Koinadugu district, said the stated 21 days set for a bill to mature into law is not applicable to that circumstance because there has been a motion for it to be debated when parliament instructed the Bank Governor to simplify for MPs to be well abreast with it and also educate the public about the redenomination of the Leones.

However, the Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Mathew Sahr Nyuma, requested that MPs provide the motion of notice that was served to the office of the Clerk of Parliament in that regard.

But he could not produce it, therefore, the Speaker ruled that it should not be commented upon.

The Bank Governor Professor Kelfala Kallon announced to journalists in Freetown early this year about the redenomination plans for the country’s currency. He said it costs a lot for printing and minting of the current notes and coins and believed the new initiative will address that issue. Also he stated the revised notes will ease the discomfort of carrying huge bulk of notes.
