As part of efforts in putting premium on science courses in schools, the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) is on the verge of recruiting more teachers of science taught courses in schools across Sierra Leone.
Addressing teachers at the Sierra Leone Teachers Union office in Kenema, eastern Sierra Leone, the Director of Teacher's Management, TSC, Marian S. Abu, noted that more attention had been given to teachers who graduated from universities and colleges and offer science subjects in schools. She added that the commission has embarked on popularizing teacher's deployment policy at regional level.
"This engagement has to do with job fair recruitment purely for mathematics and science subjects areas. We are ready to recruit more science teachers as many as they are available with credible certificates,” she said.
Abu added that they were trying to address the deployment issue of teachers, noting that there were teachers who leave their deployment areas for places they are not assigned to.
‘‘Teachers have transferred from one school to another from their previous recruitment schools. TSC has realized that names of teachers will be on payroll in Kailahun but decided to stay in other places, which is wrong. We want to address deployment issues in the teaching field,” she said, adding that deployment will now be limited to district level.
She went on to note that as teachers, they have not been able to achieve their learning outcome over the years, noting that most of the failure of the pupils at public exams is the cause of the teachers not the kids.
The mandate of TSC, according to Abu, is to see that teachers are equally distributed in schools, recruited, promoted and retirement packages given to them, and not for approval of schools.
The Deputy Director of TSC Kenema District, Tamba S. Bockarie, reiterated that this new recruitment drive is an opportunity to promote science courses in the school system.
"This is the first time in the history of education for priority to be provided for specific course areas. We don't want impersonation or cheating in this process. Science faculty seems to be in coma as most schools lack science teachers," Vangahun said.
He went on to note that out of 218 teachers who were suspended from payroll, only 52 teachers were in active service for Kenema District.
