The Acting Speaker of Parliament, Solomon Sengepoh Thomas, has on Tuesday 16 February, 2021, ordered the National Coordinator of NACOVERC and two others to appear in the well of parliament to explain their preparedness for the Ebola virus that has surfaced in neighbouring Guinea.
The Minister of Health, Minister of Internal Affairs are part of the team to appear on Tuesday.
The leader of Government Business in Parliament, Honourable Mattew Sahr Nyuma, of constituency 019, Kenema District, said that the substantive Speaker of parliament together with the minister of Health were out of the country to Guinea in relation to the issue of Yenga and also the outbreak of the Ebola in Guinea.
But said that the minister of Health will be invited to parliament to inform MPs about what is going on and also inform them about what was discussed in Guinea immediately they return. He added that MPs around the border areas with Guinea will also have the opportunity to inform the house as to what is happening in their various constituencies.
“I think we have to work towards that so that we can ensure that our people are safe because this is a compounded problem. We have COVID and we do not even know how to deal with the COVID and now we have our usual friend, the Ebola and not only that we need to have the COVID team here again to see how best they can tell us about the variant,” he said.
He added: “we heard about the (Corona) vaccine. So what is the programme? We need to know something,”he said.
The Acting Speaker of parliament Solomon Sengehpoh Thomas, then ordered the Clerk of parliament, Umarr Paran Tarawally of constituency038, Kono District to Summon in writing the authorities.
“I so order, Table clerk, ensure that this is passed on to the Clerk of parliament. The NACOVERC Coordinator, the Minister of Health and the Minister of Internal Affairs let them appear before parliament on next week Tuesday to tell members of parliament how prepared as a nation we are,” he said.
