The Parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs oversight has engaged the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) East and its personnel, at the police headquarters Eastern Region. The aim of the engagement was to analyze their functions and give advice accordingly, where necessary.
The Chairman of the oversight committee, Honorable Alusine Kanneh of Constituency 013 in the Kenema District, noted that their committee, as mandated by the Constitution of Sierra Leone, periodically meets the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) nationwide to discuss issues surrounding the security of the state. He allayed the fear of all and sundry that the meeting was not a witch-hunt, but rather, a family gathering to discuss pertinent issues that would help the institution grow comparatively.
He praised the AIG-East and his team for their relentless efforts in the sustenance and maintenance of law and order in one of the most controversial cities of Sierra Leone, Kenema. He encouraged them to continue unabated and disclosed that he did not doubt the AIG-East, as he had known him to be very professional and assertive in the dispensation of his duties throughout.
In response, the AIG- East; Mustapha Solomon Kambeh, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, and the entire police under his jurisdiction, thanked and welcomed members of the oversight committee, and assured them of their safety. He gave a brief rundown of the security status of his area of responsibility and emphasizing the porosity of the borders leading to the sister countries; Guinea and Liberia that flanked Sierra Leone.
After healthy deliberation between the two parties, the AIG East, together with its personnel presented a well codified and explicit status report which could probably answer questions about the operations, achievements, and challenges, covering the period under review.
The Parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs oversight is constitutionally charged with the responsibility of evaluating and proffering advice to the Sierra Leone Police Force (SLP) for good service delivery.
