The National Unity and Reconciliation Party (NURP) has expressed concern about the alarming rate at which hate speech and inciting messages are prevalent on social media.

The party made this concern through a press release dated 10th November 2022, noting that the manner in which social media platforms are used to promote hateful speech, inciting messages, and unlawful protest across in the country, is alarming.

The released explained that the institution’s leadership is not happy about the continuous use of social media and other platforms to spread hate and calls for unlawful protests.

“The NURP is a political party founded on the ideals and principles of good governance in particular, to foster and advocate for a peaceful, stable, united and reconciled nation, as the basis for economic prosperity for all citizens, irrespective of your tribe, district or region of origin or your political party affiliation”, a part of the statement reads.

The NURP condemned and denounced any call for unlawful protest or demonstration of any kind especially those aimed at disrupting the peace, security and stability of the nation.

In an interview with NURP’s Chairman and Leader Jonathan P J Sandy explained to Politico how they have used different platforms such as radio and television to educate and inform the public about the negative effects of hate speech and unlawful protests.

He added that their party has been engaged in dialogue forums at institutions, discussing the misuse of social media, misinformation and disinformation and tribal line politics.
