By Hajaratu Kalokoh

President Julius Maada Bio has appointed Ambrose Sovula as the new Inspector General (IGP) of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).

The decision was officially announced on Friday evening in a statement from State House.

Sovula, who until his appointment was Assistant Inspector General of Police, replaces Richard Moigbeh, who was required to step down after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60.

Moigbeh held the position of Deputy Inspector General since 2010 and was appointed by former President Ernest Bai Koroma in 2017 as Inspector General of Police, after the retirement of Francis Munu.

Prior to his appointment as IGP, Sovula was in charge of Freetown West Division, before that he headed the North East region.Sovula is now expected to go through Parliament for confirmation.

The Sierra Leone Police, established by the British colony in 1894, is one of the oldest police forces in West Africa.

The SLP is primarily responsible for law enforcement and crime investigation across the country. It is under the supervision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
