The Minister of Information and Communication, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, has been named among a panel of 100 judges to decide on an upcoming award for female journalists in Africa.

The African Press Organization (APO) funded journalism competition, dubbed ‘African Women in Media Award’, is slated for December 2-3, 2020.

APO said the contest is part of its commitment to supporting the development of journalism on the continent.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, 3rd November, the leading pan-African communications and business consultancy firm announced the jury for the prestigious award.

APO said this is the largest and most influential panel ever assembled for a journalism prize on the continent.

The Award recognizes, celebrates and empowers African women in the media who support female entrepreneurship throughout the continent, and it’s open to African female journalists whose stories were broadcast or published between 1st January and 31st October, 2020.

The stories will be judged on content, writing, analysis, creativity, human interest and community impact, the organization said.

The judging panel entails 100 luminaries, including global icons such as Naomi Campbell and top business executives like Microsoft’s Harley-Davidson and FIFA.

APO said that the panel was chosen to reflect the importance of recognizing gender equality in business and the media.

The event, it added, will attract senior executives from every major industry on the continent and elsewhere, including Microsoft, Dangote, Twitter, and Coca-Cola.

Founder and Chairman of the APO Group, Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard, said that the panel of quality judges assembled for this year’s award represented a display of the passion which has made the award one of the biggest in Africa.

“I’ve never seen a judging panel of this quality before, and we are honored that every member shares our vision for women empowerment and entrepreneurship. Their passion and enthusiasm has helped make this award the biggest of its kind in Africa,” he said.

He thanked the judges for devoting their time and energy to the APO Group African Women in Media Award.

The judges will be asked to select the winning journalist, who will then be announced at the 6th Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (AWIEF) to be held via a Virtual Conference, on the theme: ‘‘Reimagining Business and Rebuilding Better.’’

AWIEF is a prestigious annual event that sees global thought leaders, industry experts, policymakers, academics, development organizations and investors gather to connect, network, share, collaborate and transact in a combined effort to boost Africa’s entrepreneurship ecosystem for women.

Founded in 2007, the APO Group assists private and public organizations in sharpening their reputation and increasing their brand equity in target countries across Africa. Key among its role is to leverage the power of media and build up strategies that enable organizations to produce a real, measurable impact in Africa and beyond.

AWIEF is a pan-African women’s economic empowerment organization that promotes and supports female innovation, technology and entrepreneurship across Africa, through a portfolio of high impact programmes.

Its mission is to foster the economic inclusion, advancement and empowerment of women in Africa through entrepreneurship support and development.
