After over a month's break in school sessions across Sierra Leone, pupils and their teachers will today return to the classrooms for the commencement of the 2022/2023 academic year.
The Minister of Basic and Senior School Education (MBSSE) in a social media post urged parents, students, and teachers to show up early, eager, and ready to learn, noting that its starts on day one.
Minister David Moinina Sengeh also noted some reforms in the education sector during the holidays. “Close to 1000 teachers have undergone professional development this holiday, Over 2000 teachers will be added to the payroll, more classrooms have been built, and more people enrolling,” he said.
However, there are concerns that the ongoing voter registration exercise will affect learning. In that, some of the teachers might have been employed as registration staff, and the fact that some school facilities were on Saturday used as registration centres.
In response to the concerns raised, the Communication Analyst at the ministry, Augustine Sankoh said the ministry had engaged school authorities to not let the exercise affect learning.
“They can allow their schools to be used for the registration process if their schools are selected as centres but they can equally create the opportunity whiles they allow the children to attend classes,” he said.
The academic year in Sierra Leone ends in July and commences in September.
