Schoolboy to be charged with murder

By Politico staff writer

Politico can authoritatively reveal that the CID in the coming days will charge a schoolboy with murder over the death of his teacher in Freetown. Usually, reliable sources say after weeks of painstaking investigations, a decision has now been reached to charge Aroun Conteh with the murder of 68-year-old Gilis Edwin Ola Johnson.

Mr. Johnson’s body was found in blood in the afternoon of Saturday 11th March 2023 at Victoria Street in Freetown. Neighbors told Politico that Aroun Conteh was seen leaving the house on that day. Close family members say he attended private classes with other young people at Mr. Johnson’s residence regularly and was very close to the slain man.

According to the police, Conteh a pupil of Providence Secondary School went to the Aberdeen police station and reported the killing of his teacher which he blamed on an officer from the Operational Support Division (OSD) of the Sierra Leone Police.

Hundreds turned out for the funeral of Johnson who taught for more than 40 years with members of the Sierra Leone Teachers Union putting on black clothing to mourn a “fallen colleague’’.

A senior member of the Sierra Leone Teachers Union told Politico “We are patiently waiting for this case to come to trial and for justice to be done”. Copyright © 2023 Politico (17/05/23)
