Protest over Samura Kamara’s ACC invite

By Politico staff writer

Gloucester Street in downtown Freetown where the Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC) Office is situated was the scene of protests yesterday that degenerated into confrontations with the Police following the Commission’s summoning of  former All Peoples Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate Dr. Samura Kamara to answer questions concerning Sierra Leone’s Chancery building in Manhattan New York, which is the subject of an ACC investigation.

Police had to fire teargas canisters and engage scores of youths who were hurling stones and other missiles. Shops had to close down for hours during the clashes. Several arrests were made though Politico could not up to press time confirm the number of people in custody. Order was eventually restored to the affected downtown areas.

Inspector General of Police, Michael Ambrose Sovula was soon to go on a foot patrol of the scene of the clashes and nearby streets. He said the Police would maintain law and order so that peaceful citizens would go about their daily activities unhindered. He warned that the Police would not tolerate lawlessness.

The ACC has been investigating officials of past and present governments over the awarding of the contract for the Chancery building and the more than 4 million dollars spent from 2011 to 2019 regarding its renovation and addition of floors.
