The Acting Speaker of the Parliament of Sierra Leone, Sengepoh Solomon Thomas, has ordered that the head of Sierra Leone Roads Safety Authority, (SLRSA) and the Inspector General of Police, be summoned to the house so they could discus with members how to resolve the issue of trucks parked on the streets of Freetown without any safety measures, as well the the other safety concerns of road users.
The request for appearance of those officials came as a result of the leader of the main opposition, Chernor Maju Bah, of constituency 126, Western Area Urban, explaining to colleague Parliamentarians how he had on several occasions questioned the capacity of the SLRSA. He said general road safety in the country has become a serious challenge, citing the fuel tanker explosion that led to loss of lives of many lives. He therefore suggested MPs sit with them to proffer solutions to the numerous road safety issues facing commuters, motorists and travellers in general.
The Acting Leader of Government Business, Bashiru Silikie, in his response, also stated that places like Ferry Junction , Up Gun and Cline town, all in the eastern part of Freetown, have many trucks parked along the streets without any reflector or any other security measures put in place.
The Chairman of the Committee on Transport and Aviation, Ambrose Maada Lebby of constituency 083, Bo district, while responding to the Speaker’s question as to when they will be summoned to Parliament, he said he will discuss with the Chairman of the Committee on Internal Affairs for a date for such an engagement. It was also suggested that the Head of Traffic in the Police should be present.
