Parliament passes Sierra Leone's 2020 budget

  • Dr Abass Bundu, Speaker

Sierra Leone’s Parliament on Wednesday passed into law “The Appropriation Act 2020”, otherwise called 2020 budget.

The approval of the bill followed debates by Members of the House issues within the document leading to some amendments.

The move by the House effectively authorizes expenditure from the consolidated revenue fund for the services of Sierra Leone for the 2020 financial year.

The budget totaling Le8.6 Trillion was presented to parliament in November.

The government said the budget was designed to address “Bread and Butter” issues through job creation and innovative financing. It also increases the minimum wage from Le500, 000 to Le600, 000. Salaries are also increased effective April 2020. It provides for recruitment of teachers, health and police personnel, and it introduces payment of salaries to mayors and chairpersons, their deputies and core staff of Councils.

Overall, the budget is seeking to consolidate and improve on the country’s human capital development.
