Network Movement for Justice and Development (NMJD) has supported the District Coronavirus Emergency Response Centre (DICOVERC) in Kono with food and non-items.
The donation, which was also made to quarantined homes, is part of the organization’s stride to complement government’s effort in the fight against COVID-19, it says.
NMJD’s Project Lead for Natural Resource Governance and Economic Justice, Emmanuel Gbondo said funding for support had come from the EU-Kimberly Process Civil Society Coalition, Irish Aid Programme, the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) and Oxfam.
Gbondo said EU-Kimberly Process Civil Society Coalition specifically provided $4,220 for an Assessment Study on COVID-19 impact on the socio-economic situation of Diamond Mining Communities.
The study shows that Tankoro and Gbense chiefdoms in Kono are among the worst affected mining communities in the eastern region. Lower Bambara chiefdom in Kenema has also been affected and it also benefitted from the donation.
During the handing-over ceremony in Kono, Hannah Kumba Charles Ali, an NMJD staff in the district, said that NMJD being a rights-based organisation was committed to promoting development and complementing the government’s effort in eradicating COVID-19, which he said had had a lot of socioeconomic impact across sectors and living conditions of people in the country
The Kono District Coronavirus Emergency Response Centre Coordinator, Samuel Sahr Sam said the donations were timely and outstanding as they targeted both the centre and the quarantined residents.
He noted that the items donated would be used for their intended purposes and that the end beneficiaries would benefit accordingly. He called on the organisation to continue its leadership and financial support towards the centre to win the fight against the COVID scourge.
