The National Commission for Democracy (NCD) has in a sensitization tour across the country expressed concern over a number of hitches in some voter registration centres in parts of the country.
A report by the commission highlighted shortage of voter- update receipt books, inadequate shelter, problem with identification of first-time voters, and some technical challenges with the machines.
The motive of the voter registration sensitization tour was to enhance and ascertain the effectiveness of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) on the process.
NCD which is regarded as a governance institution that seeks to promote the fundamentals of democratic good governance considers the sensitization to be very significant to educate the public, especially first-time voters, about the registration process.
NCD’s regional offices and headquarters reached out to marketplaces, Ataya Bases, and other areas of major convergence within the communities.
The commission reminded the public about speedily registering on time, though mindful that the registration process is in two folds and urged people to be patient, noting that the process will reach their area at the stipulated ECSL date.
It also alerted qualified registrants about the requirements of the voter registration exercise. It also observed that the process is so far going on peacefully despite hitches in some centers to do with the slow pace of the process and other technical challenges with the machines.
The report observed that despite the challenges that surround the process, the turnout in some centers was encouraging and that the registration process so far is going on smoothly.
It expressed the commission’s resolve to continue with its observation exercise to lend support to the credibility of the process.
NCD aims at educating and encouraging the public to defend the constitution at all times against all forms of abuse and violation.
