A member of the main opposition, the All People’s Congress (APC) party in parliament, Daniel Brima Koroma, of constituency 046, Koinadugu District, has said that the condition of the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute (SLARI) stationed at Rokupr in Kambia District is deteriorating.
He noted that the doors and windows have been vandalized and that some of the expensive equipment have all been stolen and that the building was sandwiched by tall grasses. According to him, that is a result of the industrial action by the junior staff about seven months ago, which he said nothing has been done about.
“… As a member of the agriculture committee, and based on our recent or past oversight over our MDAs, and the project working under the ministries, SLARI is one of them…. The condition of SLARI is slowly dying. It is very pathetic,” he noted.
According to him, research institutions are very important for the onward development of every country, but he said it is being neglected in Sierra Leone.
He, therefore, recommended that the speaker order the leadership of SLARI to meet with the Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and Labour to have a joint meeting on how to dialogue on the issue at hand, which the Speaker of Parliament, Dr Abass Bundu ordered.
