More care needed for Sierra Leone fuel tanker fire victims- Health Min.

The Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Austin Demby has revealed that the healing and care for the Wellington fire victims will take a long time due to the fact that some of the injured suffered 60- 80% burns. Speaking during the weekly press briefing held on Thursday 11 November 2021, the minister said he is certain healing would involve a process “that goes way into the future”; with the care for victims changing, as the recovery evolves.

He said rehabilitation for some will take expertise care for years. He recognized the capability of health workers but however said there is a problem with capacity. He also expressed appreciation to health personnel that flew into the country to help during such a crucial moment. Dr. Demby noted that the medical materials from WHO, UAE and other groups came in handy and will be well utilized.

Director General of the National Disaster Management Agency Rtd.Lt.General Brima Sesay said they established an incidence command center as a way for victims and their loved ones to be able to access information on necessary updates they may need.

Speaking on statistics, the Director stated that the total of 229 people were affected with 138 as  total number of fatalities as of yesterday, whilst 59 are still admitted in various  hospitals. 75 of the deceased who were buried at the Gbolima Centre at Waterloo were burnt beyond recognition. Preliminary loss assessment was done by the Ministry of Health, and according to a report presented to NDMA, 5  households were affected, 5 shops and an office, 22 vehicles , 48 motorbikes  and 3 tricycles.

Highlighting some of the important decisions made during the first and second inter-pillar coordination meetings held were arrangements for safe and dignified burial, DNA sampling of corpses, need for high protein diets for patients, and that official data should come from the military only.

The Chinese Embassy donated 43 hospital beds including assorted medical supplies with the Ambassador pledging Le 500,000,000 to the disaster relief account.  Leone Rock Metal Group presented food and non-food items and CTC donated 500 of 25kg bags of rice to NDMA. EU and the French Ambassador promised to fly in specialized health personnel. The UAE, US Embassy, FBC and other institutions also made donations.
