More August protesters jailed

Magistrate Isata Sellu-Tucker of Pademba Road Court No. 2 in Freetown has sentenced John Koroma, Mohamed Samura, Alie Jalloh, and Charles Caulker to 18 months imprisonment and fined each of them the sum of NLe 4,000 (four thousand Leones) after they were found guilty of committing public order offences in Makeni during the violent anti-government protests on 10th August 2022.

The four, Koroma of 7 Stocco Road in Makeni, Samura of Wilberforce Barracks in Freetown, Jalloh of 11 Abu Lane in Makeni, and Caulker of 26 Sahid Kamara Street in Freetown - faced two counts of Riotous Conduct contrary to section 12(a) of the 1965 Public Order Act No. 46 and Insulting Behavior contrary to section 3(1) of the same act.

Count one states that the accused on Wednesday 10th August 2022 at NP Parking Area, Azzolini Highway, Makeni, Bombali Shebora Chiefdom, behaved in a riotous manner while count two said all accused persons on the same date and place did behave in a disorderly manner.

In her ruling on Wednesday November 16, Magistrate Sellu-Tucker said all what the witnesses that testified against the four men corroborated the offences they were charged with.

The magistrate said she found the accused guilty and imposed the required sentence and that they must pay the fine to the State.

Lawyer Charles Israel Williams represented the accused while Sergeant 6226 Memunatu Kandeh Sesay prosecuted the matter.
