Mabesseneh Hospital up against Ebola

By Bampia James Bundu

Head of the Mabesseneh Hospital in Lunsar Town, Brother Michael Koroma has urged the health ministry to include the hospital into the health delivery system insisting it should be recognised.

He said the District Health Management Teams should also decentralise all catchment areas to the community hospital to ensure that it provided quality health service to the wider community.

Brother Michael urged the health ministry to provide the required medical equipment and other support to health workers in the chiefdom so that they could deliver their health care services effectively and efficiently.

The Saint John of God Hospital, commonly called the Mabesseneh Hospital, in Lunsar has braced up to ensure that it saved as many lives as possible from Ebola.

Recently the hospital donated 29 bags of rice plus Le 1.5 million to affected persons and an additional Le 500,000 to community youths to undertake cleaning exercises in the environment.

The hospital has also been in the forefront of a weeklong programme of organised Ebola training and sensitisation, in collaboration with the ministry of health. That event had targeted religious leaders, heads of institutions, health workers, drivers, bike riders, youth groups and traditional leaders from the Marampa Chiefdom community.

The training was aimed at equipping health workers in the Chiefdom with basic skills in infection prevention and control practices and in the use of Personal Protective Equipment.

The end of the week-long activities coincided with the reopening of the hospital, which had been shut down for disinfection after some Ebola-related deaths.

The hospital’s management also donated packets of apron, gallons of chlorine, bottles of Dettol solution, boxes of disposable gloves, pairs of boots, bottles of liquid soap and dustbins to the Konike clinic, Lunsar hospital, Baptist Eye hospital, Arab Clinic, Marampa Peripheral Health Units and the Sierra Leone Police Force.
