Le 20 million bail for ‘thief’

Magistrate Sahr Kekura has granted a 20 million Leone bail to one Tamba Matturi accused of stealing a motorbike belonging to Hassan Bangura.

The statement of offence read that Matturi on the 6th July this year conspired with other unknown persons to commit a felony to wit larceny. In similar vein, the Police also alleged that the accused on the same date stole a TVS motorbike belonging to Bangura bearing the registration number ARH 834. The motorbike was valued 12 million Leones.

On Monday, 13th September 2021, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Aminatu Darboh led in her second witness one Abdul Kamara.

Kamara, the witness at the Pademba Magistrate Court No. 1 informed the court that it was on 6th July 2021 when Bangura made a complaint to him concerning the accused and the said motorbike. He claimed the complainant informed him that he gave the accused his motorbike but failed to produce it. He asked the accused for the motorbike but he told him that someone had used the motorbike to purchase something at Congo Market. He stated that when he enquired from the accused if he was the one that gave the keys to the motorbike to the person that went with it, Matturi replied in the negative alluding that the said individual might have put the motorbike on direct mode.

The witness said that when he informed the accused that the motorbike had been stolen, he disagreed with him saying it will soon be returned. He explained that it was at this point the complainant whispered in his ears to bring the Police to the alleged crime scene. He added that he went to the Police on that instruction and brought a Police officer who arrested Matturi and took him to the Adelaide Street Police Station where Kamara made a statement.

The accused during cross-examination informed the court that the witness had no knowledge about the matter and had never spoken to the witness about it.

It was at this juncture that the Magistrate granted a 20 million Leone bail to the accused with one surety who must produce an employment letter. The Magistrate also ordered that the bail be approved by the Deputy Assistant Registrar. The matter was adjourned for the 22nd September 2021.
