Lands ministry hands over 223 acres of resurveyed land to MMCET

By Politico Staff Writer

The Minister of Lands, Country Planning and the Environment, Dr. Dennis Sandy, has officially handed over 223 acres of resurveyed land to the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology (MMCET), Goderich campus. Dr Sandy personally handed over the land to the Principal of the college, Dr Philip Kanu, on Thursday at a short ceremony in the conference room of the Ministry of Information and Communication.

Sandy said at the occasion that the survey was done on the land following a request by Dr Kanu to reclaim the college’s property. The Goderich campus of the college has for years lost its land to poachers in the area, under claims that it’s a community land.

Most of its occupied land has been used to develop private properties and entertainment structures, because of its close proximity to the beach.

Sandy said the history of MMCET showed that the country’s former Prime Minister, Sir Milton Margai, bought a land stretching from Peninsular Road to the Atlantic Ocean for the learning institution.

The survey process which lasted for two weeks was led the by Director of Surveys and Lands. Sophisticated technique and gadgets like drones were used to map out the area and take proper measurements, according to the ministry.

Sandy said this is part of his broader plans to make sure access roads are not blocked and lands are not encroached upon.

In his remarks, the MMCET principal, Dr Kanu said the college had spent more than 10 years in court and spent up to Le 500 million fighting against the encroachers. He said the college’s council will now be able to decide on the necessary steps to take with the available land after the survey.

Funds from the Arab Bank had already been secured for a possible expansion and refurbishment projects, according to Kanu, who added that this wouldn’t be a problem with the amount of land the Goderich campus now has.
