The Minister of Labour and Social Security, Alpha Osman Timbo, has affirmed his government’s commitment to creating more employment opportunities for youths with skills training.
Timbo made this commitment at the Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) vocational training institute in Freetown, where 45 youths mostly women are currently undergoing a three months skills training.
“The ministry will continue to initiate more skills training opportunities for youths for them to be gainfully employed in the labor market, locally and internationally,” Timbo said during a visit to the school.
The training is being conducted by the Hunan International College with sponsorship from by the Chinese Embassy in Freetown.
Timbo said this is a manifestation of President Julius Maada Bio's commitment to create more employment opportunities, particularly for the youths through technical and vocational trainings.
Timbo also thanked the government of China for providing the instructors, sewing machines, fabrics and utensils for the training.
As part of this training, the students are being thought skills like sewing. Chinese trainers have been blended with local instructors to conduct the training.
One of the local instructors, Laura Sillah, commended the trainees for learning fast and maintain discipline.
A trainee, Alpha Umar Kamara, commended the government of Sierra Leone, and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security for initiating the training opportunity.
Kamara called on the government and the private sector to provide them contracts for sewing uniforms and other outfits once they complete their training.
