A charity group in Kuwait known as Esteemed Kuwaiti Ladies has sponsored the drilling of bore holes in Koinadugu District. The donation, which was done through Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Kuwait, Haja Isata Thomas, is part of ways to give much more access to safe drinking water to rural communities in the country.
Four boreholes were drilled in different areas in the district; Gbawuria, Kabala Town, Bankolia, and Kamanemeh. The project was implemented by Ishata and Abbassie Thomas Foundation in Sierra Leone.
“Kabala Township is known for its water challenge, particularly during the dry season. Being born and schooled in Kabala, I know the ordeal of fetching water from streams; therefore I see it as a priority to provide clean water for my people,” Ambassador Thomas said during a short ceremony in Koinadugu last week Tuesday.
“The goal of the New Direction is to alleviate poverty by addressing the concerns of Sierra Leoneans, especially those in remote communities,” she added.
Speaking on behalf of the people, PC Gbawuru Mansary of Warra Warra Chiefdom, commended the effort of the ambassador and the State of Kuwait in providing safe drinking water for his people.
A beneficiary in one of the communities, Pa Alie Mansaray, thanked the Ambassador and the Kuwaiti donors for addressing one of the challenges of their community, stating that before now, it was very difficult to access safe drinking water, but the borehole has filled that void.
Access to safe drinking water is still a challenge for many in rural communities in Sierra Leone.
