Former presidential aspirant of the Alliance Democratic Party (ADP) Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray is yet to meet the bail conditions set by a Judge after a year on remand fighting an indictment for allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old girl.
Justice Samuel Omodele Taylor on Tuesday 7th September 2021 granted bail in the sum of 100 million Leones backed by two sureties who should be property owners in the Western Area of Sierra Leone. He must also report three times a week to the Master and Registrar of the High Court and sign the attendance book reserved for that purpose and deposit with the Master and Registrar all his travel documents both foreign and local.
The bail application was made by Kamarainba’s lawyer Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, who said his client and the second accused Marion Arouni will avail themselves at subsequent proceedings and that the first accused being a politician was looking forward to seeing the conclusion of the case.
State Prosecutor Umu Sumaray did not oppose the application but expressed frustration over the slow pace of the matter on the side of the defence. She said although she had not objected to bail the judge should note that the matter had dragged on for far too long.
Since the bail was granted, the politician has failed to meet the bail conditions as pronounced by the judge, according to a press statement from the Judiciary. The statement notes that “The first accused has not produced his foreign travelling document in total compliance with the bail conditions”. It added “one of the sureties Isha Baby Koroma, is not ordinarily resident in Sierra Leone, she told us in the interview that she is a US citizen.”
Several groups including parliamentarians had called for the release of Kamarainba Mansaray on bail while the trial continues. As we went to press he was still detained at the male correctional center in Freetown.
