Kamaraimba criticises lockdown

By Mustapha Kamara

Chairman and leader of the newly registered Democratic Alliance Party (DAP), has condemned the government’s plan for a 3-day lockdown saying “it will not make much impact in the fight against the Ebola Hemorrhagic fever in the country”.

Speaking to Politico yesterday, immediately after donating over 20 bags of rice to people in three communities in Freetown, Mohamed Kamaraimba said that though the initiative was in place, it would not be enough to stop the spread of the disease.

He said he would have preferred a 21-day stay-at-home for its citizens, which he believed would have proved more meaningful.

“I am not expecting to see much after the three days because three days is not enough for persons infected with the virus to start showing signs and symptoms of the virus”, he said.

He said the three days would only help with sensitisation, something he said was not too important at the present moment when the virus was claiming innocent lives every day.

Noting that Sierra Leone was a poor country with thousands of its citizens finding it difficult to provide for themselves on a daily basis, he said “it is but fitting for the government to have endeavoured to provide food for poor families in every corner of the country for the next three days as they stay at home.”.

He however lauded government's efforts in the fight against the disease so far but cautioned that a lot more needed to be done if Ebola was to be eradicated from the country.

“Government needs to take more drastic actions. We need more visionary decisions to be taken by our leaders”, Kamaraimba said.
