Hundreds shelter in mosques in Bonthe

By Joseph Sevalie in Mattru

Hundreds of people have been left homeless at Nyandehun in Yawbeko Chiefdom in Bonthe District after fire engulfed their homes in the afternoon hours of Saturday 12 April.

55 houses were burnt down and 469 people displaced forcing them to seek shelter mostly in mosques and schools.

The victims told Politico the fire was caused by a bush fire emanating from the slash-and-burn farming practised in the area.

A heavy storm was said to have blown across the village with fire particles taking over the mostly thatched houses, spreading it across and engulfing the entire village.

The victims have called on government and aid agencies for help. But up to yesterday - five days since the fire and the attendant displacement - no relief had reached them.

The local Member of Parliament, Moses Jorkie said he was saddened by the incident and concerned that no relief had yet reached the people. Sounding distraught, he said he would visit the place this weekend and see what could be done.
