Hospital staff testify against medical superintendent accused of theft

By Newman Anthony Levey in Bo.

Prosecutors for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) have presented one of the hospital staff on Wednesday as a witness against Dr Peter Belmoh Samai.

Edmund Yarjah is a technician at the hospital, and he installed the generators.

Dr Samai, who is the medical superintendent at the Bo Government Hospital, stands accused of taking one of the three generators donated to the hospital by foreign donors to his house.

Samai made his third appearance in front of Justice Alfred Tommy Ganda last week.

Prosecution Witness No.2, Musa Justin Seppeh, Acting Store Manager Ministry of Health and Sanitation, said he was asked by the ACC late last year to provide documents that they supplied generators to the Bo government hospital.

Seppeh said Safula Mansaray signed on behalf of the hospital to receive the generators in February 2017. He said the generators were donated by the Japanese government to the National Emergency Operation Center.

He explained that two of the generators were green and that the third one was white. Seppeh said he could recall that at least one of the generators was 20KVA.

PW3, Yarjah, told the court that he was instructed to fix one of the generators at the laboratory.

"My Boss, Mr Mansaray, the Hospital Secretary, asked me to install the generator to the lab and I did exactly what he told me to do," he said.

Yarjah said two other staff, Abu Kamara and Adonis Jaward, agreed for the generator to be moved to the mortuary “because the bodies were going bad.”

"I only came to know that the generator I installed is not at the Mortuary when Mr. Abu Kamara, head of the Bo Mortuary, was grumbling about the generator gone missing. Since then, which was 2018, unto this time, I haven't seen the generator,” Yarjah said.

Yarjah said three Monitoring and Evaluation officers had since visited the hospital to take inventory.

Dr Samai’s lead defense lawyer was not in court on Wednesday.  Kabba Sei Coomber, one of the members of the defense team, pleaded for the case to be adjourned.

Justice Ganda adjourned the hearing to the 3rd of March this year.
