Turning of the sod, a symbolic event to mark the commencement of construction work for a maternal health facility within the Koidu Government hospital complex has been held at the prosed site.
The facility which is being built by Partners in Health will have a 166 bedroom provision which will address the health needs of pregnant and lactating mothers and children. The new structure will serve as a teaching hospital for health care students as well. According to sources it will be a state of the art facility which when completed will serve not just Kono district but outlying districts and even beyond.
Minister of Health and Sanitation Dr. Austin Demby did the turning of the sod for the facility. Dr. Demby had earlier told Journalists that the maternal mortality figures have slightly reduced but the picture was not good enough and would want to see improved health care in pre-natal, natal and the formative years of children.
Partners in Health is an American -supported not -for -profit organisation that has operated in Sierra Leone for over five years now providing medical care for people in rural communities.
