Fourah Bay College’s Students Union Government (SUG) has awarded NLe 2,500 (two thousand five hundred New Leones) each, as part grant-in -aid to female students from different departments.

The partial tuition grant was awarded to selective deserving female students and according to the SUG’s Ministry of Information, the grant came through the support of the Jewel Starfish Foundation, a Liberian-based organization owned by the Vice President of Liberia, Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor.

The Deputy Registrar, Brima Bah urged the beneficiaries to commit themselves to their academic work and ensure that they make a difference on campus. "You have to count yourselves lucky for such a laudable gesture from that fine personality" Bah said.

The SUG’s Minister of Education Christiana Lansana expressed appreciation to the VP for what she said was her zest in empowering African women through her organization which anchors on the mission: "To equip the generation of female leaders with the skills and tools they need to become significant contributors to their communities and society’’.

Lansana spoke on the need for the beneficiaries to maintain a cordial relationship with one another in order to foster the growth and development of the foundation on campus.

She called on them to join forces with the Liberian VP to make the voices of women be heard in an Africa with a patriarchal society, and that to achieve this, they must try to acquire the requisite education for them to speak up against the ills in the society.

Alfred Micah Sesay, the President of SUG reminded the students that the grant came as a result of their commitment to making sure that deserving female students who are less- privileged are given the opportunity to attain education.

He called on the students to make great use of the opportunity and encouraged them to take their academic work seriously.

"What you have received today is the wish of many other students on campus, know that your space will be occupied by another student if you do not perform well in your exams", Sesay said.
