Disabled persons whose houses were destroyed in fire incident in Kenema on 28th August this year have asked humanitarians organizations and philanthropists in the country to come to their aid, as they go through numerous difficulties.
A fire had gutted the building they were occupying close to the Kenema Correctional Centre.
The Chairman of the affected people, Gbessay Moseray explained the challenges they are going through ever since the blaze, including lack of clothes, insufficient food and no accommodation, saying life is miserable for them.
He said about 70 family heads have since the tragedy been occupying a structure that was formally used by international organisation IFAD. He added that the two apartments they currently occupy have over twenty occupants both male and female per apartment, who sleep on the bare floor.
He pointed out that, due to congestion in the place, some people especially children have started developing skin diseases.
Moseray maintained that, since the incident happened, they have only received food assistance, and some supplies from Member of Parliament (MP) Mathew Sahr Nyuma, National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and other humanitarian groups.
‘’We are calling on government and development partners to help rebuild the structure for us,’’ he said.
He stated that their children cannot afford school materials as he said all their school belongings got destroyed during the incident.
One of the affected women, Jeneba Koroma said women are the most troubled by the unfortunate situation, and explained how one of their colleagues that was pregnant and having health complications underwent surgery which led to her losing the baby.
‘’We are calling on our women Organizations to help us,’’ she said.
