The Parliament of Sierra Leone will today 2nd July end the debate on the speech delivered President Julius Maada Bio in Parliament on the 18th May 2021. The debate started on the 28th June 2021.
Speaking at the well of parliament on Thursday 1st July 2021, Member of Parliament, Abdul Murray Conteh of constituency 130 thanked President Julius Maada Bio for “an inspiring speech”.
Speaking on education, Conteh said the government has contributed immensely to human capital development by providing education. He said that more than any time in the nation’s history, Sierra Leone has had more children including girls in school, with low expense to their parents and guidance.
Responding to comments from other MPs, Aaron Koroma of constituency 048 said the Kono University is a baby of the erstwhile government saying “you can find that in page 21 of the Ernest Bai Koroma handing over note to President Bio”. Undertones were made by other MPs from the other political parties debunking Koroma’s statement.
He said that the president had promised to make sure that disabled and the aged are taken care of health wise, but that he said is yet to be done.
Speaking on Energy, the MP explained that Minister Alhaji Kanja Sesay is busy lighting up different areas, through the rural electrification and mini-grid component.
Emilia Loloh Tongi of constituency 001 in Kailahun district started by congratulating the just elected female president of Fourah Bay College students union. She further thanked the president for including women in strategic positions in his government, and said for the first time Sierra Leone has a female Deputy Assistant Inspector-General of Police. “This shows the president has an interest in women,” he said.
Member of Parliament, Abdul Titus Kamara of constituency 061 said in 2018 some MPs proffered recommendations for the Free and Quality Education, but that they were not paid attention to.
He told the house that in his constituency, there are many schools that have two classes in one space, which makes it difficult for students and pupils to understand. He explained that one of the solutions they had proffered earlier was on improving infrastructure.
The Speaker of Parliament Abass Bundu advised members of parliament to take the COVID-19 vaccine. He said that MPs should serve as exemplary figures for the people in their constituencies by taking the vaccine and also sensitizing the people about the importance of the vaccine. “You owe it to your people. By next week there will be a new development that will compel all of you, to go to your communities and sensitize them,” he said.
