CRC meets on media issues

The Constitutional Review Committee has engaged media and communications experts to seek advice on relevant laws that should be reviewed and amended in the final document that will be the outcome of the review process.

The meeting, which aimed at identifying gaps and challenges that are related to access to information and freedom of expression, was held at the commission’s office in Freetown.

UNDP’s technical adviser, Sana Baloch, urged committee members to look at specific media related laws, policies regulating media, information and communication in Sierra Leone.

He revealed that the CRC had received over thirty position papers relating to the roles, responsibilities and regulations of the media, information and communication from different institutions in the country.

He advised members to go through the various recommendations that had been made available to the committee in different position papers so that they would be able to make appropriate recommendations for the upcoming draft constitution during the preliminary process of the review process.

Lecturer and communications expert, Hindolo Tonya Musa, elaborated on the relevance of information and communication structure in a country and made constructive recommendations about the improvement in information, communication and technology.

He also highlighted present gaps in the media, information and communication sectors in the country which he described as detrimental to the progress of the country.
