By Mabinty M. Kamara

Bonthe has joined the growing list of districts in Sierra Leone recording COVID-19 cases, after four people were confirmed positive of the viral disease.

According to updates of the pandemic released by the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in the early hours of Wednesday, Bonthe becomes seventh of the 16 districts in the country that have recorded cases of the virus.

Bonthe is also the first district in the southern region to record a case in the spiraling pandemic.

The EOC did not give details on how cases could have possibly surfaced in the coastal district.

Other districts that have recorded cases so far outside the Western Area Urban and Western Area Rural are Port Loko in the northwest, Kenema in the east and Tonkoli and Bombali in the north.

The Western Area Urban, which include the capital, Freetown, has been the worst hit among the rest, with 81 cases.

The cases from Bonthe brings the cumulative tally of COVID-19 cases in Sierra Leone to 116 as of Wednesday, 29th April.  There were 12 recoveries and four deaths.

Today, April 30th, marks exactly one month since the country recorded its first case of the COVID-19 pandemic on March 31st.
